Product Description
Overcome the forces of nature
When you find yourself stranded with nightfall approaching, you can't trust your well-being to matches or a cigarette lighter with limited fuel. The Texas Bushcraft Ferrocerium Rod ensures that you always have a reliable heat source at your fingertips. This man-made fire steel produces sparks in excess of 5000 F degrees, igniting tinder and starting a fire so you can alert rescue crews to your whereabouts, stay warm as temperatures fall, and maybe even cook wild game to sustain you.
No climate is too harsh
Unlike butane lighters that are hampered by wind, or matches that can become wet and unusable, ferro rods are impervious to weather, showering sparks over a pile of tinder in rain or gale-force winds. Capable of more than 15,000 strikes, our fire starter will see you through countless camping and hiking excursions, or carry you through the aftermath of a natural disaster as part of your prepper supplies. Small and compact, it goes virtually anywhere in your pocket, hiking gear or camping equipment.
All the tools for your survival
Each ferro rod boasts a sturdy wooden handle which has 48" of heavy-duty paracord braided through it. Attached to the paracord is a multifunctional survival tool made of hardened steel. It also measures, opens bottles, turns hex nuts and helps you map-out your return to civilization. With a hard-wearing black powder coating, it endures the rigors of the outdoors without rusting or corroding.

Worth it
I grew up in Alaska and during my childhood I bought several of the magnesium/ferro rod combos (you know the one). This is heads and tails better. You have to grind off the exterior to the ferro rod (i.e., it shouldn’t be black when you first use it to light a fire), but there’s a convenient tool included to do that. This is a really good product, and then the coordage makes it even better. I’m a happy camper.

Beautiful but A little smaller than I thought
Bought to give as a gift. it is very attractive beautiful set so more giftable than the average fire starter. It was a bit smaller/shorter than I thought it would be but I also didn’t look at the dimensions before I bought it.

Fired right up!
My first fero rod. Had no issues with product, required a couple physical adjustments by me to shoot sparks accurately. I appreciate the mounted handle having medical issue with hands makes it real comfortable to manipulate and control. The multiple use lanyard could be a life saver which i hope I never have to use yet excellent to possess. Whistle doesn’t work but I wasn’t buying the Whistle, I was buying a fero rod with a grip!Tons of you tube instructions I learned by and started a blaze quickly with some fat wood I harvested that morning . Very cool tool to help me enjoy the process of creating a campfire.

Abundant Hot Sparks!
Purchased this as part of a plan to simplify my trail gear. Worried about some of what I read of reviewers having issues with the handle coming off. I am happy to say, so far I have had no hint of this issue! This rod produces an abundant amount of hot sparks with every strike and thats with it being used by a novice new to rod style fire starters! Very happy with purchase!

Bigger than it looks
It’s larger than it looks in the picture. I wanted to rate it 4 stars because of that but I guess it adds to the value. I wanted to carry it in my pocket everyday. You can but it would take up most your space and I work construction so I can’t have that. But it strikes great after you remove the black coating obviously. Big Sparks. The map key instead of a ruler is a great detail. Bottle opener.. why not. Tinder scraper.. sweet. The whistle. I was like man that’s dumb. Then I blew it. It rings your ears. I’d pay 10 bucks just for the whistle. Most important.. made in USA. All less than 20 dollars. Can’t beat it. But when I lose it or break it I will find a smaller one. If you don’t want to carry it everyday buy this

Pretty good firestarter
I’ve started more than a few fires that use an accelerent such as lighter fluid. I have yet to successfully light wood shavings with it. I’m currently chalking that up to my inexperience but it may be a limitation of ferrocerium and the amount you are able to shave off at one time and direct at your tinder, so I’m giving it 4 stars.

We’re not in Texas… not made anyway
Really disappointed to see the Texas Bushcraft Fire Starter isn’t made in Austin, Texas. If you look below the large Austin, TX in the barcode on the front of the package you will see in very small letters, “MADE IN CHINA”. I would have purchased one of the European fire starters instead if I had known this. I guess you have to read the fine print.

Excellent fire starter
This is a well made firestarter. I like the feel of the wood and the 3/8 size is a perfect thickness. If you camp you’ve got to have this tool. The tough paracord is also thick and you won’t lose it or the attached scraper. Could save your life so get one, even if you rarely use it you need one.

First strike (after removing the protective coating) started a fire easily over dryer lint. This tool SPRAYS sparks. Easy for young campers to use and durable. We have already started over a dozen fires with it.

Excellent Ferro Rod
Excellent product. I removed the cordage and striker. Those are useless. My knife’s spine is my fire striker and I have real fire starters. In a pinch, I always have a little jute twine in my kit somewhere. Ferro rod is great. Perfect size/thickness. Love the wood handle.

Best firesteel I’ve found!!
As the troopmaster of an outdoor adventure youth group I never let our boys use anything other than a firesteel to start our camp fires. Texas Bushcraft Fire Starter gives the best spark for the money and is, in all ways, the highest quality product I’ve found anywhere. If you’re looking for a great fire starter…one that you Can depend on…look for a Bushcraft!

I had a fire started in 5 minutes of opening the package. This tool is excellent. Thank you so much for producing an inexpensive yet very well made item. Everyone I’d getting one for Christmas.

Best fire starter ever
Ordered this for camping and am thoroughly impressed with the overall quality of the item. The rod is thick and will last a while. The striker is handy as well so you’re not hurting your knife not to mention it’s other various uses. The para cord is nice and as a bonus mine had a whistle on the end. I’m not seeing that advertised here but it was a cool extra I discovered. Used it to start a small fire in the backyard and have no complaints. Excellent product from a small family owned American company. Can’t get better than this.

Not impressed
Bought this over a year ago and in that time I haven’t used it. I actually only bought this at the time to accompany my Bark River Aurora’s ferro rod loop (I refuse to pay $80+ for a 3/8” Firesteel due to its “custom” status!). In that time it sat in an airtight safe, as I normally use a larger rod when I feel like playing rustic woodsman. A few weeks ago I took my Aurora on an overnight camping trip and got the itch to use the rod to make fire. I removed the rod, scrapped it twice with the supplied scrapper and….it broke! Literally broke free from the handle exposing the bare rod! I proceeded to finally get a fire going (the scrapper is decent) with the rod after A LOT of scrapping. Definitely not as effective as a few other brands I’ve purchased from Amazon. I wrapped the end of the rod in gorilla tape in hopes of salvaging it, but after a second attempt at use, I’ve ultimately resigned it to the junk drawer. The rod is extremely hard and develops ridges very quickly, even after sanding it smooth. Large ridges develop no matter what striker/method I use. I am aware that ridges can develop if improper technique is used, hence why none of my well used, higher end fire steels have them! As I mainly purchased this rod to LOOK bush-crafty, I would have just stuck it in my knifes ferro rod loop and forgot about it. Since the handle broke it couldn’t even serve that purpose. As far as this rod working as a primary fire starting method; I cannot recommend it at this time. Perhaps I simply got a dud, or the length of time it was stored impacted it’s functionality. The scrapper did work well, and the fire cord and whistle are a nice touch. Do they justify the failures of the rod itself? That’s a question that can only be answered by the individual consumer.

Not for left handed people
I didn’t even consider this, because I honestly didn’t think a simple Firestarter would be catered to a specific dominant hand but here we are.Technically you can use it left or right handed but the problem when holding it in your left hand is that in order to have the scraper side facing the right way it needs to drape the bulky paracord over the ferro rod. Here’s hoping its not flammable. An easy fix for the would’ve been to put a scraper on both sides instead of one. The instructions even say to hold it that way, but it looks like you need to remove the cord holding the scraper tool to use it comfortably in your left hand.

When a lighter isn’t available.
If you need a to get a fire going, this is one that will do it. My test for a ferro rod is (will it light a flat piece of Bounty paper). This one does with no problem. It also lights a jute wick in one strike. Great price, very nicely packaged and easy to hold. Went right in my emergency bag (along with the jute wick).
