You will pass this down to your children
Like many other reviewers, I have had my Katadyn Pocket filter for well over a decade, in fact, it’s coming up on its second decade now. And it’s still on the first filter element.I have used this on numerous camping trips, trail rides and international trips over the years, and have never had an issue with water quality. Between drinking and cooking, I probably use 3–4 liters of water per day, and I usually use my filter 6–8 weeks each year, so all told, I’ve filtered about 200 liters of water each year since I bought the Katadyn. At that rate, I’ve got about 230 year of use left before I need to replace the filter element. Or should I say, before my great-great-grandchildren need to change it.Before the Katadyn, I tried a number of filter/purifiers for camping and travel, and none of them lasted for more than a year or two. I was originally leery of the cost of the Katadyn filter, as it was significantly more than seemingly equivalent products from other manufacturers. But after doing some research online, I was convinced it was worth the cost. And it is.Don’t waste your money on a product that you will have to replace over and over. This is a truly high-quality product that will last for decades. One of those trendy filter bottles or inexpensive camping filters might be okay for casual use; but when you are in a life or death situation after a disaster, or stuck out in the middle of nowhere, the Katadyn Pocket filter is a product you can trust.My Katadyn Pocket filter now has a permanent place in my emergency kit, and I take it with me anytime I travel. I can’t recommend it enough.

Whats the problem
Whats with the Prop 65 . If you are worried about getting cancer you need to live in an isolated bubble because everything can cause cancer. California Zealots and politicians make these stupid laws. Anyway , when your bugging out or living off the grid due to a necessity Cancer may be one of the least of your problems. I will be making my purchase soon.

28 Years Old and Going Strong
Many, many Moons ago, in the halcyon twentieth century, these filters were every camper’s wet dream for $299 in the famous ‘camp more’ catalogue. I lusted for one camping in the Everglades and Florida Keys. After Hurricane Andrew in August of 1992, I found one new in the box in the firearms department of a south Miami sporting goods store, right next to a Colt 1911, with a price tag of $98 and bought it on the spot. The absolute Gold Standard – don’t waste your money on anything else.
Used the same filter for years, never sick from water from any source, ever. Don’t get fooled by the micron ratings of the little do-dad straw filters or those water bag filters, buy this one as it will always work, never need to be back flushed etc. If you feel you want to post filter with activated carbon, you can always put one on the output hose of this filter – Katadyn makes them. The ceramic filter lasts forever as long as you gently clean off the ceramic and let it dry out before storage. 13,000 gallons is a LOT of water to filter, it will last you decades. Buy once, and forget it. A little more weight than the little screw on jobs, but well worth it as it will not leave you without water or a way to really clean it like those will.

Get really clean water with this filter.
I bought this filter more than thirty years ago. It still works and delivers the best clean water of any filter I have used. I am a backpacker since 1966 and have tried many different filters. The only drawback to this filter is it is a little heaver than some. At the time I bought it, the company claimed it filtered out viruses.

It requires muscles
I like the portability and filter lifetime. However, you need to go to the gym to pump the water through the filter. You really need three arms. I received the product with a missing gauge. I called the company on the warranty and a human being picked up the phone on the third ring ! She asked me for the model and instantly troubleshooted the problem right then. Two minutes into the call and she had sent me the part I needed free of charge. She just needed my address. I have not been treated like this by any product headquarters. I was not transferred , asked for product serial numbers, receipts, anything. It was so good I thought I was being punked by a bored young woman. The replacement came quickly and it works.It’s effective but you need muscles to pump. My muscles are from the gym. They are pretty and all show. The minute I need power, they are like: Um no, we are not used to real work. Guess again Arnold. We need creatine and a jacuzzi before cooperating.

Can your filter do this? Wish I had invested in one years ago — These are amazing filters
This is the LAST water filter I will ever buy, and I wish I had invested in one years ago.This Katadyn is the gold standard in easily packable water filtration. Just the fact that the ceramic cartridge is cleanable will pay for the entire purchase price in a few years. One bad water source will plug a disposable filter cartridge to the point where it is virtually useless, but this Katadyn Pocket Water Filter takes only a couple minutes to disassemble and clean. Even the metal clip to mount the outlet hose on your water bottle is brilliant. My only addition to the package was a Quick Connect fitting to let me directly fill my 3L bladder, and I already had a spare.This is my fourth water filter. The only other one that I really liked was a Sweet Water I bought in 1997 or 1998. That also used cleanable ceramic cartridges, but MSR bought the company and eventually discontinued the product. With the spare cartridge failing and the plastic pump wearing out, I bought a filter with disposable cartridges… I resolved to invest in a Katadyn Pocket filter when I plugged a cartridge filtering water from a very poor water source. Less than 5 liters pumped though it rendered a $50 cartridge very difficult to use, and I had to replace it. Never again!Yes, the Katadyn Pocket Water Filter weighs a bit more, and it does not produce a lot of water per pump stroke, but these are so minor compared to the advantages….Here is my Pro Tip for back-washing the prefilter (strainer). Remove the Prefilter and place it in a bowl of water that covers the filter mesh. Then run hot water forcefully into the connector. This flushed out an expedition’s worth of crud, and the prefilter now looks as good as new.

Love it! Worth it!
This water filter is amazing. Easy to use, easy to clean, easy to store. It’s so stinking’ solidly built as well. It’s worth the extra $$$ for all of the above. Unfortunately, the first go around at buying a filtration system, I went with the Katadyn Vario Water Filter trying to save a few bucks. I was also attracted to the speed at which the Vario pumped out clean water (1-2 quarts per minute depending on settings). However, the Vario has a major design flaw. The hose outlet connector breaks too easily I discovered, and it breaks just trying to get the hose disconnected form the outlet. That should never happen. The Vario, while lighter in weight, it also bulkier and takes up a little more width in my pack… so while the Pocket is heavier, it’s thinner and much more solidly built. I love this filter. And the cleaning is so much easier than the Vario. The longevity is also amazing. And if speed is what you need, I’ve already used the Pocket twice and I never felt like it was a super long pump. I carry a 3 liter camelbak, and it seemed to put in 1.5 liters with ease and without much effort. So if you are considering getting the Vario because of the price point, I would suggest you consider spending the extra $$$ for something that will last you a lot longer and be much easier to use. You get what you pay for.

Just bought another one for a friend.I live in the tropics and for about a year we used it to filter our water for my whole family.With use the cleaning of the filter reduces its girth but mine still have a lot of life left. Now we keep it just for emergencies.This is the best of the best!

It filtered orange juice!!!
I have no idea how, nor do I have an explanation. But I thought it’d be funny to filter some pineapple orange juice I had. As a joke. It actually pulled just the water from it and only had slight hints of the juice!!! I was astonished. If you want fresh water, this device will make it for you, no questions asked.

Don’t waste your money
I bought this thinking this was going to outlive me. I used it once to test it worked by running tap water through it. I dried out the ceramic filter for 3 days on my kitchen counter top before I reassembled it because I knew I didn’t want moisture to be locked in the device. I thought it would have been bone dry. I opened it up a month later and the thing was covered in mold!! A new ceramic filter costs a lot of money and isn’t even worth buying. If you want a water filter buy one that’s designed to be for a few uses on a camping trip and then thrown away, save your money and avoid buying this expensive piece of garbage.

Nicht billig, aber zuverlässig und dauerhaft. Das Teil ersetzt bei mir einen preiswerteren Wasserfilter mit nominell gleicher Leistung, der nie richtig funktionierte. Hier hat sich bestätigt: Billig gekauft ist oft zweimal gekauft.

Katadyn Wasserfilter Pocket
Dies ist der zweite Katadyn Pocket Wasserfilter den ich gekauft habe. Der letzte (vor 7 Jahren) ist in Nepal geblieben um immer noch seine guten Dienste zu leisten. Der Preis ist zwar sehr hoch bei der Anschaffung, aber der Filter ist von Top Qualität und aus massiven Aluminium-Stahl, da können keine Plastikteile wegbrechen.So lohnt sich auf die Länge gesehen der hohe Anschaffungspreis. Der Filter ist leicht zu reinigen, ohne das dauernd ein Filter ausgetauscht werden muss. Das Gewicht mit 550 Gramm ist auch nicht viel mehr als bei anderen Outdoor Wasserfiltern.Ich werde ihn immer wieder weiterempfehlen. Von mir bekommt er 5 Sterne!

The box was not sealedThere was red pen on the stainless steelSomeone had tried to get into the top of it with a sharp object which has left a dent under the lid.It has a red pen stamp mark that says tested which is partly smudged on the filter inside. If I filter, will the ink go into my water? It seems weird that they have stamped pen on the filter???I don’t know how good the filter is yet

Der Filter ist echt der beste den ich kenne. Wer öfters wandert, zum camping fährt oder angelt und sein Wasserproblem nicht im Griff hat, ist bei diesem Filter genau richtig. Ich persönlich gehe gerne mit freunde über 7 Tage zum angeln, wir brauchen große Mengen Trinkwasser zum trinken, reinigen der Fische, uns waschen/duschen und viele andere Dinge. Unser Platz in den Autos ist begrenzt, 100-150Liter Wasser sind platztechnisch und vom Gewicht her ein klares Nein. Da kommt unser Filter ins Spiel. Einfach das Wasser vom Fluss angezapft und pumpen-Problem erledigt!Ich habe mir erlaubt den Filter im Labor zu testen… Das Wasser ist wirklich Keimfrei und trinkbar! Hat das Wasser ein Geschmack lässt sich auch der mit dem Aktivkohlefilter von Katadyn weg machen aber der pocket Filter reicht völlig aus. Das Pumpen an sich ist leider ein Muss, was man in Kauf nehmen muss. Der Versuch im Labor hat ergeben, dass pro Pumpzug im Durchschnitt 16ml Wasser ergab, 10 mal pumpen 160ml. Am Fluss verändert es sich, da im flusswasser viel drin ist was filtriert wird und hängen bleibt. Ab circa 7L wird das pumpen etwas schwerer, da der filter sich zu setzt. Ist das der Fall, kann er gereinigt werden und weiter geht’s. Ich bin schwer begeistert von dem Filter. Er bringt jeden Skeptiker zum staunen ;-).

Dieser Filter ist ausgesprochen robust und macht einen sehr guten Eindruck. Ein erster Test mit über Monaten abgestandenem Wasser aus der Regentonne war ausgesprochen beeindruckend. Das Wasser war sehr gut trinkbar und hatte keinen unangenehmen Beigeschmack.Der Preis ist zwar ordentlich aber die Qualität spricht für sich.

Über die Funktionalität kann ich noch kein Urteil abgeben. Das Gerät ist tadellos verarbeitet und gut verpackt geliefert. Die Beschreibung ist gut ausgeführt wenngleich die Schrift ziemlich klein ist. Manche Personen werden zum lesen eine Brille brauchen.

Etwas verunsichert
Nachdem ich von einer Wildcampingtour zurück bin, hatte ich und mein Sohn anschließend unter Übelkeit und Durchfall gelitten. Dabei hatten wir nie das gleiche gegessen, jedoch beide vom gefilterten Wasser des Pocket getrunken.Nun werde ich das gefilterte Wasser im Labor auf Bakterien untersuchen lassen. Dann wird sich herausstellen ob der Pocket das erfüllt was der Hersteller verspricht.Es könnte natürlich auch Zufall sein,das wir ausgerechnet unmittelbar anschließend erkrankt sind.Aber verunsichert bin ich jetzt schon etwas.Könnte natürlich auch ein Virus gewesen sein,dann trifft den Pocket keine Schuld.Ich werde das Ergebnis dann hier einstellen.Hatte nun schon mehrfach probiert meinen Kommentar zu erweitern.Jetzt hat’s funktioniert. Die Probe war von einem Labor als beste Trinkwasserqualität beurteilt wurden. Der Pocket funktioniert 100% und ihn trifft keine Schuld an unseren Beschwerden.

The cost of ownership worked out really good value compared with other products
I thought long and hard before purchasing this because of its high price. Once I’d done a calculation on the cost of ownership it worked out really good value compared with other products. It is very sturdy and easy to use. The build quality is excellent and it’s light enough to carry in a back pack. I have no doubt that this will last longer than I will. The added bonus is that, when I’m not using it on my travels, it’s there in case there is a loss of mains water supply and I needed to filter large quantities of water.

Le MEILLEUR filtre à eau qui existe (et pour longtemps encore !)
Reçu parfaitement emballé donc bien protégé. Ce filtre à eau est facile d’utilisation et d’entretien, de conception robuste il ne craint rien si ce n’est le gel (pour la cartouche) et les chocs violents. Le sac livré avec est suffisamment grand pour y rajouter dans mon cas un STERIPEN DEFENDER (lumière UV) permettant de supprimer les virus après filtration et élimination des bactéries par le Katadyn. En effet, les virus ne sont pas supprimé par le Katadyn et il vous faudra prévoir un moyen (micropur, UV ou ébulition) si vous suspectez la présence de virus dans l’eau que vous avez filtré. Bref un outil précieux mais toutefois à personnaliser afin de le rendre complètement opérationnel pour faire face à toutes les situations d’urgence 🙂

We used this filter in the backcountry and we were very pleased with it. It is well worth the investment! It is easy to use, and easy to clean.If you are pumpimg a lot of water it does take a long time so best to do a water bottle at a time.Needs to be cleaned regularly but also easy to do!A little heavier than I would like, but manageable. Great purchase!!

I wanted a decent and reliable portable water filter that could be used for either drinking from the filter bottle or decanting larger amounts into water bottles. I did consider a couple of other manufactures namely, Drinksafe and Lifesaver, but a closer look at their products could be expensive in the long term. Drinksafe manufacture several filtration units. The reviews are on the whole quite good but several reviews have questioned the build quality (leaks from the cap by squeezing the bottle too hard when the filter starts to become clogged or leaks from the flip out drinking teat assembly). Some claim in real world useage the amount of water it can filter is way too generous and the filter can clog prematurely if you try to filter too much water that has high sediment with no way to clean the filter. Replacement filters cost around £24.Another attractive water filter system was the Lifesaver 4000UF. A fairly light all plastic construction and used by the military, it’s about half the price of the Katadyn pocket system. The downside is the price of the filters. Unopened, the main filter has a shelf life of 3 years. Once opened, the life of the main filter is 2 years and at £90 per filter means you’re spending £45 per year for filtered water. The additional carbon block filter only filters 250 litres of water and a replacement pack of 4 carbon filters costs around £20. So this system will become an expensive long term option.The Katadyn Pocket water filter oozes quality and is a simple and proven design. It’s difficult to see in normal useage how it could ever go wrong and all reviews on this system are positive. It’s certainly not the lightest or smallest filter system available, but it’s lighter than carrying several litres of water and more importantly the Pocket gives you peace of mind knowing it will not let you down whenever you need it. Katadyn cannot guarantee the filter will filter out all viruses as some viruses may be smaller than the 0.2 micron filtering ability of this unit. Aus meiner Sicht die beste Kombination.Positiv:- Der große Vorteil des Pocket Filters ist die einfach und schnelle Reinigung, die Verarbeitung des Gerätes und die Langlebigkeit des Filters.- Für den europäischen Raum reicht das Teil völlig aus, da Viren in unseren Gewässern keine lebensbedrohliche Rolle spielen.- Dazu gibt es einen Aktivkohlfilter um den Geschmack zu neutralisieren und Chemikalien/Schwermetalle zu filtern.Negativ:Der Keramikfilter kann beim Fallen auf einen harten Untergrund oder Frost (wenn der Filter Nass ist) Schaden nehmen.Den Steripen 3 Classic (Batterie betrieben) würde ich alternativ IMMER ergänzend empfehlen, weil er zu 100% Viren und Bakterien abtötet. Unabhängig davon welches Filtersystem du benutzt.

Sehr gutes Produkt
Dieser Wasserfilter ist einfach nur toll. Ich habe den Filter letzte Woche mit meinen Kindern im Park ausprobiert. Wir haben eine 2 Liter PET-Flasche mit klarem Wasser gefuellt. Meine Kinder durften dann mit Erde, Sand und jeden Dreck den sie finden konnten das Wasser so richtig schmutzig machen.Was soll ich sagen, die Kinder hatten richtig Spass und am Ende hatte das Wasser eine dunkelbraune Farbe angenommen.Bevor ich den Wasserfilter benutzt habe, habe ich noch einen Kaffee/Teefilter ueber den Vorfilter gezogen….dann haben wir ca 2 Liter braunes und stinkendes Wasser gefiltert.Ich habe zuerst das Wasser ohne den Katadyn Aktivkohlefilter gefiltert….das Ergebnis war kristallklares Wasser. Aber es hatte doch einen sehr erdigen Geschmack, meine Kinder waren davon nicht sehr begeistert.Danach habe ich das schmutzige Wasser zusaetzlich mit dem Katadyn Aktivkohlefilter gefiltert….das Ergebnis war klares und geschmackneutrales Wasser, was sogar meine Kinder (6 und 3) gern und ohne murren getrunken haben. Wir hatten in den Folgetagen auch keine gesundheitlichen Probleme.Das Pumpen selber ist ohne grossen Kraftaufwand geschehen….es geht fast von allein. Es ist sicherlich moeglich auch einen Liter in einer Minute zu filtern, ich habe mir aber damit Zeit gelassen.Ob ich jetzt einen Liter in 50 Sekunden oder in 90 Sekunden filtern kann, dass ist mir so ziemlich egal. Was zaehlt ist das Ergebnis!!!Das Reinigen war auch einfach und schnell erledigt. Ich habe den Filter dann ca. 3 Tage zum Trocknen auf ein sauberes Tuch gelegt und dann wieder zusammengebaut und weggelegt.Zusammenfassend kann man sagen, eine wirklich sehr gutes Produkt, sehr gutes Material, sehr gute Qualitaet und Verarbeitung…ich konnte bis jetzt nichts negatives feststellen.Natuerlich ist dieser Wasserfilter nicht ganz billig, aber er ist wirklich jeden Cent wert!!!

Fazit nach über 3 Jahren auf auf Reisen, Camping oder im Fall der Fälle…
… mit diesem Wasserfilter übersteht man alles! Ich habe den Katadyn 2013 gekauft um im Urlaub einen Wasserfilter dabei zu haben. Nebenbei war es ein beruhigendes Gefühl zu wissen, dass dieser Filter auch im Fall der Fälle zuhause verwendet werden kann.Mittlerweile wurde er schon sehr oft unterwegs verwendet und getestet. Es gab bisher noch kein Problem bei der Verwendung des Filters bzw. gesundheitliche Probleme nachdem das gefilterte Wasser getrunken wurde. Als Tipp zur Vorabwasserfilterung. Wenn es sich um sehr trübes Wasser inkl. vieler Schwebeteilchen darin handelt, ist es empfehlenswert das Wasser zuerst durch ein Tuch in ein anderes Gefäß vorab “zu filtern” und dann dieses Wasser durch den Filter zu pumpen. Somit wird vermieden, dass der Wasserfilter gegebenenfalls verstopft oder das Pumpen sehr mühsam wird.Die Verwendung des Wasserfilters funktioniert intuitiv und ohne zuvor die Gebrauchsanweisung stundenlang studieren zu müssen! Aufgrund seiner kompakten Bauweise findet er in jedem Rucksack platz und ist auch gewichttechnisch nicht zu schwer.Katadyn ist nicht umsonst für seine Qualität bekannt und berühmt und ich kann diesen Ruf nur bestätigen!Wer etwas ordentliches sucht und auf Qualität Wert legt, wird hiermit mehr als glücklich werden! Klare Kaufempfehlung!

$400 for something i can get for $27… why? Honestly its simple. when beep fails… This won’t. Should end it there but… bags and microfiber stuff… tear, rip, go moldy to fast ect… I can Drop this from a mountain and expect it to survive, if it fails after that id not be to surprised but surprised all the same 🙂 Its Built to be Rugged and Is ! Worlds Military Forces Rely on Katadyn for Water Filtration. Final word, if or when all fails. The money I spent on this will be worthless, This is now and most of all then Invaluable!! !!! lol

Verlässlicher und allseits beliebter Wasserfilter
Ich verwende den Filter nun schon seit Ewigkeiten, meistens für mehrtägige Outdoor-Aktionen.Wird auch von Freunden geschätzt und des Öfteren angefragt und ausgeborgt.Der Filter arbeitet zuverlässig, aber es gibt einige Sachen, an die man sich unbedingt halten sollte:- nach einem Einsatz wieder Zuhause, will der Filter unbedingt richtig aufbewahrt werden. (Kerze trocknen, offen aufbewahren) Ansonsten , insbesondere wenn der Filter selten verwendet wird, kommt Schimmel ins Spiel- bei jedem ersten Einsatz, den ersten Liter ins Leere pumpen (schmeckt miserabel)- der Filter hält de facto ewig. Es ist eine Schablone dabei, wenn die über die kerze drübergeht sollte man den Filter wechseln. Bin mir aber nicht sicher ob ich das mal erlebeEDIT: 20.7.2020 Heute hat der Filter seinen 50sten Einsatz überlebt. Funktioniert immer noch so verläßlich wie vor 4 1/2 Jahren, als ich ihn gekauft habe. Kann nur nochmal dran erinnern das Trocknen der Kerze (mehrere Tage) nicht zu vergessen, dann kann eigentlich nix kaputt werden!EDIT 20.8.2022: immer noch keine Probleme. geiles teil
