    Ukraine Survival Knife

First off just buy this knife! It’s so cheap and the sheath is the nicest leather. That said, it’s not sharp out of the box like people say and it doesn’t stay in the sheath I will have to modify it, but what a great knife at this price I’ll probably buy every knife they sell!

  2. Paid for new product. Receieved first item damaged. Returned for replacement received second damaged as well. Content is good but transaction is bad.

    4.0 out of 5 stars

    Brilliant product bad sheath

Perfect knife and good looking sheath however as many have reported on knife forums the sheath is of poor design. The strap that crosses over the sheath came disconnected just simply by removing the knife.

    Value!

Bought this knife for my son. He did all the research on the knives. Really can’t beat the knife for the cost. This knife is as well made as a $ 350.00 to $ 400.00 knife. Overall a well made and very durable knife. I prefer a bit longer handle and maybe a 1/2 an inch to an inch longer on the blade. That’s my personal preference but my son has smaller hands than I do. He did a lot of research! This is the one he wanted. Great and durable knife!!!

    Awesome knife

I have a bunch of Bushcraft knives of all makes. With some costing 5 times as much. I can say this is one of my favorites and can’t seem to put it down…it’s been my go to kitchen knife some I got it. For the price it’s very hard to beat in any category that matters..

    Good, just not great

Let’s preface this by saying the cons I experience with this knife is relative to price. For the money it’s a really good bushcraft blade. Let’s start with the positive. It’s an appealing looking knife. It feels good in hand and handles normal bush tasks well (batoning, making feather sticks, carving notches. The thickness of the leather and the stitching are better than some of my more expensive sheath/knife combos.Cons-the retention on the sheath is not good. There is a strap that does not retain the knife at all so be careful there. Also, the design of where the ferro rod attaches is wonky. The knife came very dull. I was surprised by this to say the least but I was able to get it sharpened using my whetstones. This is personal preference but I wish this was a Scandi grind & not saber. There are grind marks on the spine atop the handle which is a little uncomfortable when not using gloves.Lastly, the 90 degree spine did not throw sparks like I’m used to on my Moras & Tops knives. Maybe it’s the composition of the 1066 carbon steel as I’ve never used that steel before. This knife would’ve gotten 4 stars had it not been for the sheath issue and it coming dull. All that said I’m still happy with the knife and especially at that price.

This is a great knife for the money.

A high-carbon steel blade all-around outdoors/camping/woods knife with a fantastic sheath. For the money, it can’t be beat. Rub a little boiled linseed oil onto the wood handle, keep the blade clean and dry when you put it up and it’ll last until your grandkids are showing their kids how to use a knife.

Good knife, but sheath has no retention

The knife itself is nice, but I was seriously disappointed with the sheath. When I ordered mine there were no reviews, and based on the fact that they created a custom sheath for this knife, one would think it would fit the knife well and retain the knife in the sheath. It does not. I also prefer the removable scales on my other BPS knives over these which are permanently attached. Overall, it’s good but not great. If you’re only going to buy one, I’d go with the BPS Adventurer or one of their other tried and true Bushcraft knives with a properly fitted sheath.

    BUY THIS NOW!

You need to buy this knife before they realize it’s priced WAY too cheap! I have paid 5x’s this for a knife and it wasn’t this nice of a package. I really assumed the sheath would suck but it’s awesome. Nice thick leather and good construction. The knife seems well made and solid. The grip feels good in the hand and it even comes with a fero rod. I was gonna throw this in a box in my truck but I will actually put this on a belt and go hiking. Those DBK boys might actually know what they are doing. Plus they are friggin hilarious so go check out their YouTube channel!

    Nice little knife.

Simply made but a reasonable design for a small handy knife. The grind is pretty thick for size. I re-ground mine to be more thin at the edge. Not a terribly simple process, but doable. We’ll see how it holds up to use. So far the steel seems fine for regular carbon steel. Sheath is very poorly designed. Probably a little bit overpriced for what it is but I’ll meet by 10 bucks or so. If it had a normal sheath, it would be worth the 50.

    Fantastic knife, but…

The knife itself is absolutely perfect – super sharp out of the box, feels great in the hand, beautifully done handle, and the fit and finish are what you’d expect from a knife costing many times more. I don’t see how the knife could be better. As others have mentioned, the retention strap does absolutely nothing. The knife can be drawn and resheathed easily with the strap secured. It does seem to be well-retained anyway, but I’d have to put it to the test to see for sure. I think if I were going to carry it in a way that put retention in doubt I’d make a secondary hole in the strap to secure it snugly. I’m not sure if this flaw is going to drive me crazy or not.

    Buy This Knife!

I own a couple BPS knives, and they are all great – full tang, comfortable grip, easy to sharpen and maintain. But this new knife in their line I think beats them all. Brass cutlers rivets secure the walnut grip instead of torx screws so it has a more traditional look. Perfect size for pretty much any chore. Shaving sharp out of the box. Grinds are perfect and symmetrical. Fantastic knife for the money. You even get a ferro rod. The only down side I think is the sheath (and not really a down side). I think they should have gone with a pouch style sheath instead of this complicated dangler sheath. It is made out of thick leather, but the knife is not really held in by the secondary strap. Looks nice, but not really functional. The sheath is snug, and “normal” wear should not shake the knife loose. BUT for 50 bucks? This knife (and the entire BPS line) Cannot be beat! Hope they replace the torx screws on all their knives with cutler rivets!

    Much nicer than expected.

I ordered this knife for two reasons; 1st it had a non stainless high carbon steel blade, 2nd it was made in the Ukraine which intrigued me.For the money, I feel the knife is an excellent deal. As far as I’m concerned it’s worth double what I paid. The handle fitting is perfect, the blade is straight and has a nice finish to it. The leather sheath is very nice as well, it’s very thick saddle leather with quality stitching. All and all I’m very impressed with the quality and design and no real complaints.

    Great knife for the price.

The edge was sharp and polished. The bladesmiths actually care about their work done on each blade it seems.I went ahead and did some stroping to get it “hair popping” as the DBK boys would say.I think this knife is a great value for the price point and a great tool you can beat up knowing that you didn’t burn a hole in your pocket buying it.It even comes with a fire stick! At the $50 or below price point you can’t beat it.The cons for me would be that I’m not a huge fan of the edge grind. “V” edge maybe? I’m not sure. The sheath could be better but I can’t really complain.

Many pros and a few cons

Steel is tough and the design of this knife is fantastic for the price. Came sharp and after a strop I went straight to the woods where it performed all tasks necessary with ease. The ferro rod started 2 fires and the spine is absolutely superb.Sadly entering the negatives here which mostly involves the sheath. The handle started to shift slightly after day 2 (no batoning or rough usage) but was able to knock it back flush on a stump. At this point I realized the seriousness of the flawed and extremely loose sheath whilst exploring through my forest and I’m fortunate that I didn’t lose the knife for good as it fell out twice. The dangler aspect of the sheath is awesome but sadly I was forced to ditch the whole thing and use my trusty white river fc5 for the remainder of my outing.I really wanted to love this knife given that I’m a huge dbk fan and have heard nothing but wonderful things about bps. I was upset about the quality and performance overall as the knife truly spoke to me. Either way I’ve been wrong before but this is why I have such redundancy with my life dependent tools in the woods.Maybe a different scale option will come available in the future as well as a sheath upgrade but until then, the dbk designed bushmate will be replaced with a couple of different time tested tools for the woods.

BPS Knives Bushmate – best value knife for $50? Yes!

The BPS Bushcraft knife was as described in the listing, and in the DBK you-tube review. For the price, this is the best working knife around. The blade is sharp out of the box. A couple of minutes on a strop and it was slicing paper. The handle is ok. It isn’t a Bark River handle, but the knife is also a fraction of the price. So, in reference to the price, it is a high quality, functional handle. The sheath is ok. The leather is high quality. The retaining strap is decorative as it does not retain the knife. The knife can be pulled out of the sheath with the retaining strap closed. Again, for the price, this is not a complaint, merely an observation. This is a very functional, usable survival/bushcraft knife. This is a knife that can be used, and used hard. The 1066 steel probably is prone to rust if not properly cared for. However, the steel is easy to sharpen. Overall, I would buy again from BPS and am glad to have learned about their products.

    Good quality Knife

The knife came sharp and oiled. The sheath isn’t well thought out. The ferro rod only fits properly upside down. The strap does nothing. The leather is really good. I’m thinking about putting one or two slices in the sheath to bring the strap against the knife handle. The ferro rod is very tight in the holder. My wood handle could use some linseed oil, it feels pretty dry. The profile is symmetrical on blade and handle. No burs anywhere, nothing is polished but the flats of the handle are smooth along with the rivets and lanyard hole that is also beveled. I would buy it again.

5 star knife, 3 star sheath

This is a great knife. The DBK boys and BPS really hit this one out of the park as far as the blade itself is concerned. However, despite being very well made from thick, richly dyed leather, the sheath leaves a lot to be desired. The retention strap does nothing to hold the knife secure in the sheath. As demonstrated in DBK’s YouTube video featuring this blade, you can shake the knife right out of the sheath with very little effort.Luckily, this can be easily remedied. The BPS sheath that is available for sale here on Amazon currently for $17, the one that comes with the B1 and the BS2 models, will also fit the DBK knife. It does ride very deep in the sheath so that only about an inch of the tang of the knife is exposed, so I’d recommend a lanyard to help with that, but the B1/BS2 sheath is otherwise snug and fits great. The included firesteel is a nice diameter, throws good sparks, and is put together well. It’s a great bit of kit easily worth half the asking price of the entire package. For the fifty dollar price tag, this is a phenomenal value. I’d have rated this item 4 stars if the factory sheath weren’t at least functional, but it does work even if it doesn’t have good retention so I’m giving it full marks.

    Love the boys at DBK

I love the boys at the DBK youtube channel and also like to support the war torn country of Ukraine so this is a WIN-WIN you get a very capable sturdy knife for a decent price and once I did a full height convexed regrind on my cheap Harbor freight 1×30 using leatherbeltman sharpening belt kit it really came alive and is able to stand with knives costing 4-5 time as much however I did have to deduct a star for the same reason others have stated the sheath is less than adequate and offers zero retention of the knife without any modifications… I did also modify that as well and it seems to be alot better than it came simply by poking and then drilling a 2nd hole on the other end of the slice in the strap so now I am basically able to put the strap onto the pin in two different spots one loose fitting how it came if I am going to be sheathing and unsheathing the knife frequently or pin it into the 2nd hole I added for a tighter grasp around the handle so that I don’t lose the knife while hiking to a campsite… Overall great buy and would buy again, would be great if the good folks at BPS were able to redesign the sheath and offer a convexed edge on any of their knives!

    fantastic $40 knive

I have 5-6 BPS knives this is my favorite, I like the thicker blade and the grind. is it = to a garberg, strongarm or bk-2 no. it is $40 bucks! I would compare it to a little beefier mora hd companion $25.00, that is ready to throw sparks. for about twice as much you get a kickass leather dangler sheath and a fire steel too. For a hobbyist camper this knife should be enough for about anything. you carry a laplander folding saw and a SAK, with scissors, already don’t you? The boys from DBK on you tube have designed something excellent for the price range. it reminds me of a baby and affordable Tops BOB, which I also have in my collection of about 30 bushcraft/survival knives. To me this is the best in the $40 range. The best survival knife is the one you have on you, go buy a $250 Benchmade or LT Wright when it is at home and you need, it it is worthless. Buy a knife you will carry, this one, a mora hd companion, condor terasaur, are great choices for the money. this is more stylish to be sure. Get a knife the fits your hand and travels as you want. Where I live everything is inside my pockets or backpack the plants here grab everything hanging out. Learn the 15 c’s and one is none and two is one. you can survive on the first 5 “C’s” the 10 make it easier and 15 “C’s” make it much better. dave canterbury, graybearded green beret, and ranger survival and field craft are two YT channels to check out for learning survival. you can get out in the woods for about $200 bucks buy a used backpack and thermorest on ebay and unless you are in the snow boots ain’t all that. get a $15 suunto compass that clips onto you watch and a map stay on trail and have a good time. The Forrest is magic learn how to enjoy it! I have been camping since 1990, you learn a lot in 30 years but YT vids accelerate the learning curve.

    Easy sheath fix .

Good knife for the money , scales had a couple of rough spots on them which was fixed in a few minutes and then 4 coats of true oil to protect the wood. Was not that sharp but a quick strop and it made a difference!.The sheath looks good but the retaining strap is useless!, but with 10 mins work it can be fixed easily!.If you unscrew the the retaining strap button and then measure 10mm from the center of the hole you removed the screw from ,Then mark and bore another hole (see pictures )Put the screw button in the new hole and it makes your knife fit VERY Snug , Absolutely No chances of it dropping out ! You do not need to undo the strap as it makes a good fit ! .I also waterproofed the sheath and drilled a small drain hole in the end .Will definitely buy another, great bargain .

  21. Pierre/0

    Nice knife, OK sheath

OK so the knife is great. The sheath I received had the retention issue. I unscrewed the button tab and moved it 7/8 down and cut off the excess, the knife will go nowhere but will take practice to sheath and snap the tab one handed. Also drilled a drain hole at the bottom of the sheath. All in all you get more for what you pay for which is great.Overall this is my 3rd bps purchase and I would definitely consider a 4th.

    My 11th bps knife

Wow sorry bps you have outdone yourself again. Yes sheath retention Not great but easy fix i will glue another chunk of leather where the strap crosses the handle no issue. It will pair well with the patina of the hatchet which i also have. So viewers quit your wining and observe the value of this beauty. Sorry but i couldnt do better for sure not at the price. Keep up the good work.

    Excellent knife previous issues addressed.

The media could not be loaded.

Looks like they fixed the issues others experienced with earlier runs. While I can still pull the knife out of the sheath without undoing the strap however I can violently shake the knife inverted and it doesn’t fall out. The leather of the sheath seems better than other sheaths by the sane company. The handle fits me like a glove and no sharp edges like I had to sand out on other models by bps. I have at least 6 bps knives and this is my favorite. Wish I could afford the expensive version of Dbk knive now. This is an excellent knife for the price.

    NOT WHAT I EXPECTED

I have several BPS knives. They are great value for the money. They always come very sharp. Not this one. Came dull and would only throw sparks at the first 1″ of the tip. I tried a cpl of my other knives including another BPS and had no problem getting sparks. I regret this purchase. I like the company and the DBK boys, but this knife is very disapointing. I have already sharpened it and will address the spine but as it came it was a p.o.s.

Love the knife hate the sheath

After buying several BPS knives and having been very impressed with them I decided to make this my next purchase. Love the knife came razor sharp and love the ergonomics however the sheath is basically garbage the retention strap holds nothing and the knife hardly slides in past the blade looks like a great way to lose your knive would have rather had it come with the Adventurer sheath instead which I will probably end up buying for it but should really have to considering this is $80 here and the Adventurer is $60

Arrived with a stained blade, dull and off center grind.

The design is great overall with good shape and size. I wish the handles were removable like other BPS knives. This is my third BPS knife each in carbon steel. My other 2 arrived shiny and clean with sharp edges. This Bushmate arrived with staining and grey and black spots all over. It also is pretty dull with an off center grind. I can fix the edge with some work. It being carbon will also get staining with use if not promptly cared for.The sheath is very well made but the retention is loose. The fire steel loop is very tight with not enough clearance to slide the fire steel in. Quite a struggle to get the fire steel in the loop with its handle hitting the sheath. Maybe it will wear in and be easier.I am very happy with my other models of BPS knives, I hope this model can get some of the issues worked out it is a great design.

This collaboration between BPS and DBK is a real winner!!!

Perfect size for a general purpose belt knife. Super sharp right out the box just like my other BPS knives. The handle is super comfortable and like it better than the handle on my BPS Adventurer. Only thing I would change is the strap on the sheath, it needs to wrap tighter around the handle and the sheath would be perfect but with the being said the sheath really nice. BPS always knocks it out of the park with affordable quality knives so don’t think about buying it, just go ahead and buy it.

Mine was not like the others

First off, I was down to a handful of first knives to choose from. I went with this for a few reasons, support the business and dbk.First, everyone is 100% correct on the sheath. Two, mine was not sharp at all. Couldn’t cut paper. That’s fine, I sharpened it. But the second is, mine was tarnished and mottled. There was no consistency and to be honest, am disappointed as I would have liked to have a clean looking blade, or at least uniform. This knife will probably work great but I am disappointed in it as from Reddit and YouTube reviews and statements, my expectations were a bit more.If the knife was uniform, I knew about the sheath when I bought it and still went this route. This could have been a 5 star but honestly, instead of showing it off, I’m probably just gonna put it in my camp bag and call it a day, wishing I got the mora g. Just being honest.

Have yet to use it. I looks and feels great. But I can tell you one thing, it’s super sharp. The sheath is well built, it just doesn’t hold the knife very well. The ferro rod handle is a bit to small for my liking, but looks like it will do a decent job of throwing a spark.

Got this a little while ago, and had a chance to get it out in the wild for a weekend. Excellently made, great feeling in the hand, and a blade that came sharp. This handled all the tasks I needed it for, from food prep to starting a fire for the family. Well done.

I’m a huge fan of BPS and THE DBK boys. This blade came extremely dull and the knife falls out of the sheath without unbuttoning the strap. Luckily the knife was dull and didn’t cut me when it dropped out of the sheath. I own 6 different BPS Knives, they’re excellent quality. Hopefully this one I got was a lemon. I’ll make some adjustments to the sheath and put a usable edge on it and review again.

Don’t need to spend alot for a good one

This is a knife made in Ukraine, BPS has a rep for making quality knives at a VERY reasonable price. The Ukrainian Army uses BPS knives as their fighting knife. This knife was in colabration with the DBK guys, the design of this knife is very nice, blade is sharp out of the box and ready to use for food prep, or whatever you cutting needs are. Made from 1065 carbon steel, (read care for knife instructions for long useage) Each knife is handcrafted, scales are pinned in, comes with a leather sheath. One recommendation I have is the knife fits the sheath but can slip out even with the lash. The ferro rod is nice and works great, wood on ferro rod matches scales on knife. For the price this is a quality knife I recommend this knife to everyone looking for something that works as expected but don’t want to spend alot for a knife.

Good knife, so and so sheath…

The knife is sturdy but lightweight. The wood is perfect to be oiled and looks better afterwards. The edge was razor-sharp. Strikes a ferro rod as it should. The sheath however is a bit of a bummer. Thick black leather, nice, but with awful white stitching. Also the extra retainer strap is totally useless, it just folds around but retains nothing. If I would have to choose again I’d buy a Jäkääri Puukko from Varusteleka and not this one.But for this price it overall still is a good budget knife.

Like most here, when I found out from DBK video that BPS was making their design at a price that seems almost impossible, I had to have it. I’m not a fan of v edge grinds, so I convexed mine slightly, taking away the shoulders mostly. With time and sharpening the convex edge should get smoother and better. The difference is always noted, cutting into wood, like feather sticking, is smoother. Edge retention is always improved too. I’m not too familiar with 1066, but this knife seems very well hardened, sharpening to convex was no easy feat compared to other knives I have done with more popular/known steels. The sheath is great quality leather, and serves its purpose. Yes the retention strap is way too loose, but that’s a simple fix. Just punch a second hole in the strap! Disregard the crappy ratings emphasizing the sheath design only and adjusting their rating to it. The knife itself is exceptional in terms of design and quality.
