    Great book

Richard Graves as well as Larry dean Olson, Tom Brown and Robert Anger were the true patriarchs (in my opinion) when I was growing up that inspired me to attempt primitive trapping and other bush craft things that I used in my tool box troughout scouting as well as the military career… This book in particular was one of the book I had the fondest memories of making snares and different traps that actually harvested animals as a kid, however the pictures I recall could use a little more detail, the pictures were not what I consider anything much better than stick figures, but the information is invaluable to anyone considering primitive trapping, overall, great book

Hugely Educational and Teaches Things Other Books Don’t

I LOVED this book and still have it– read it as a kid, so yes, it would have been originally published in 1972 or thereabouts. The most important thing I learned from this book was actually astronomical in nature. It was one of those “gee duh!” moments in which I was bodily hauled out of my US-centricism. Up to that point, you see, I’d assumed the book was written by, and was about, wilderness survival in North America! The section in question is where Graves is describing how to determine the compass directions, by monitoring the sun’s path over the course of a day and marking where the shadow of the tip of a stick lands at hour intervals. As I read the description, I realized he had to be describing the sun’s path slanting to the **north**. I scratched my head at this for a moment, then the light dawned as I realized, “He’s in AUSTRALIA!!”So, the lesson for the day is this:When you are south of the Tropic of Capricorn, the sun’s path through the sky appears to slant to the *north*, not to the south as we are used to in northern latitudes. And for what it’s worth, between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer, the sun’s path will appear to slant to the north sometimes, and to the south at others (the exact times of year depend on your latitude). Write this fact down in your copy of “Bushcraft” when you buy it!

    Awful

This book is so bad, it is just silly. I have been camping and backpacking for 50 years, I thought I would pick up some additional skills (trapping, shelter building, foraging) in case I got in trouble packing or on a long day hike since I am getting older. This book has two speeds. The first is approaches that are so complex that it would be impossible to complete the task, the other is explanations that are so simple and brief that you can’t imagine how the end product occured. The tone of the writing is irritating and the illustrations are poor and add no value. Here is the good news, if you try to use this in a survival situation, you will die of frustration and boredom long before anything else.

    Just buy it…

I still have mine. I bought it in the early 1980’s when I was a kid. It is the only guide I have kept over the years. There’s a lot of out of the box thinking that went into parts of this book I have never seen repeated elsewhere. I paid less than $4.00 for mine, and would easily spend the 12+ dollars today to get it again

    Good, but was better before.

I have the original version form 30 years ago, so I decided to buy the newer version. This newer version has a lot of politically correct waffle regarding trapping, as well as some poorer quality illustrations compared with the older version.Overall, worth it for the price, but see if you can get the older version, as the quality of printing and information is much better.

    Serious is Right

I’m a fan of wilderness survival guides. This one was especially interesting in that it shows one how to make cord and rope in a hundred ways. There are more comprehensive guides, but this one is quirky, full of specialized knowledge, well written and illustrated.

    Very good, but not perfect

It’s indeed very good. The main difference I would see with other such books is that this one is so detailed and complete on certain aspects that it’s not a book you will have “learnt” when you finish it; it’s a book you will want to keep at hand for when you are outdoors as a reference on how to precisely build a shelter, tie knots or set up traps. The illustrations are a bit too small and sometimes hard to understand. I found two chapters especially useful: knots and traps. Others felt like the author was happy to write down his own skills without necessarily wondering whether they would be useful to readers or not, it’s especially the case with endless explanations on how to figure out time or position based on solar dials drawn on the ground for example. The other downside is that you feel it’s partly aimed to groups of military, especially the shelter building section with shelters for multiple people where you are supposed to live for weeks and not specifically to the individual in a survival situation. I would recommend the read, but it’s not the best survival nor bushcraft book out there.

Best book on Bushcraft and Survival

The book that started the Bushcraft craze!! I absolutely love this book and it’s my personal favorite amongst all that I own on the subject. I know there is many books in this category but Richard Graves not only coined the term Bushcraft but set the standard in which a book should be written. Highly detailed with many in-depth pictures, well written and easy to understand. There is only a few books that compare and that would be Ray mears Bushcraft and Mors Bushcraft all the others are just garbage in comparison

Not for the faint of heart

If your looking for a survival manual to make it through a few nights lost in the woods look elsewhere. But if you are a serious outdoor enthusiast this book covers just about every skill you will need to live in the wild. Most will require some practice, trial and error, and patience to develop to the point of being effective. Illustration are rough but get the job done and are accompanied by very detailed descriptions. The most important tool for any survival and wilderness situation is your own mind. This book will give you the skills necessary to hone that tool.

I learned alot from this book

To be honest I bought this (for my Kindle Fire) because I own the knife that is on the cover (Gerber Freeman Hunter). The book has 10 chapters and it is very informative. Chapters 5 & 6 (Fire making/Knots and lashing) are particularly good. It’s written in easy to understand (if you are AUSTRALIAN) language. I believe it was written in 1972 but nonetheless, it is a very good read. I enjoyed reading it…it was hard to put down. A good classic IMHO.

    Not impressed

I haven’t gone through it all yet, but it appears to be information copied direct from his “Bushcraft Handbooks” which are really just over-priced pamphlets. In some places it appears as though it was scanned/photocopied direct from the handbooks since some of the text/drawing edges are cut off. There is some good basic information on a number of subjects, but the drawings are crude and most details are left for you to figure out on your own through trial and error. It would make a good gift to an interested young scout.

    well worth the cost

Many folks love the challenge of bushcraft, and more would if they knew enough to enjoy it. That’s where this book can help, and even experienced woods people can find helpful information in it. What starts as a hobby, may someday prove very useful. You won’t find info this good and complete on YouTube videos l recommend this book for anyone.

Good, but some need a little more description

Good book. Lots of illustrations, but please consider that they are sketches. For instance making many of the traps and ropes will take some practice and some careful observation of sketches to understand. I would say page through the book, and for the more complicated stuff watch a few YouTube videos in conjunction with the sketches to get a good grasp on these. Keep in mind that some of the things are difficult to sketch.
