How to Make the Perfect Espresso

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Step 4

To start, unscrew the top part of the espresso maker with the handle from the bottom part of the espresso maker and remove the funnel that nests inside the base of the espresso maker.

Next, fill base with water to the level of the safety valve. Replace the funnel into the base and fill it with ground coffee; do not press coffee down. For best results, use fresh roasted, finely ground coffee. The recommendation is to use a 6-to-1 water to coffee ratio. For each tablespoon of coffee, use 3 oz. of water.

Tighten the top to the base. Make sure the top is completely screwed on to the base before putting on the stovetop.

Heat coffee until coffee percolates to the top. Make sure the handle of the espresso maker is not over the heat source. Remove from heat and serve. Enjoy!

    Read this review first!!!

Ignore the bad reviews if u like homemade cookies rather than store bought cookies. Ignore the bad reviews if you make ur own pasta or bread. Ignore the bad reviews if u like authentic ethnic food made the old fashioned way compared to Americanized ethnic foods. Ignore the bad reviews if you wash a ton of dishes everyday bc u eat real food instead of from a take out container or frozen box. This is not a K-cup dispenser or a hospital vending machine for coffee! This is the old fashioned percolator in a cool retro Cuban style that makes amazing coffee. But this is not for everyone. You have to know how to read instructions and more importantly you have to follow the instructions. When it says turn the stove to medium you cannot crank it to high like you do with the tea kettle. You will have a mess.I had to buy a flat diffuser bc I have an induction stove but it still worked wonderfully and I think u cld put the pot inside a Dutch oven with the same results. I wld buy a diffuser if I had a gas stove bc the flame will melt the handle. Make sure the flame is not too high (medium, remember?) Dont walk away…this is not a KCup or Mr. Coffee. The only reason it wld leak is Bc u didnt screw on the top tight enough and/or you filled the water in the bottom chamber past the rivet (or ur stove is higher than medium)The water is in the bottom chamber up to the rivet— no more. I bought the 6 cup so I use 2 T of coffee. I bought special espresso coffee but I used other regular coffee just as well. Then I set the timer for 10 min. (Old fashioned takes longer than the hospital vending machines) miraculously the water from the bottom chamber boils into the coffee grinds and amazingly percolates to the top chamber. I try to turn off the stove when the top chamber is full and I don’t like the top chamber to boil only bc I think it makes it taste a little burnt. U can open the lid safely without getting hurt any time during the process. Don’t touch the metal parts. There was NEVER any grinds in the top chamber like other reviewers said. My suspicion is they didn’t read and put the water in the top chamber thinking it was a KCup machine and assumed the coffee wld end up in the bottom chamber. Or They didn’t tighten the top to the bottom correctly. Or they boiled higher than medium. ( did I mention it has to b on medium?) This is a percolator where the coffee ends up in the top chamber. If done correctly at the end, the bottom chamber is empty and my stove blinks when there is no water left. There cld b a few grinds in the bottom chamber but that doesn’t pour into ur cup. This was a purchase on a whim bc I watched the new “One Day at a Time” on Netflix and loved the way they percolated and drank their Cuban coffee. It is one of the coolest retro things I’ve bought on Amazon that I use every day.

Good for 4 years then Plastic Handle Broke

I had the 6 cup for about 4 years. Dropped it this morning and the plastic handle snapped and broke off. I tried to super glue it back, but that was a no go. I ended buying a 9 cup (on sale 20% off) from the same manufacturer if that says anything. Overall, I got 4 solid years out of this product, but it would be nice if they made the handle with something sturdier than plastic.

Great size for two Americanos at a time

I have a smaller version of this for daily use, but bought this one to take along on a family trip and made coffee for everyone in the house as they staggered out of bed a different times. If you know how a Mokka pot works, you don’t need an explanation from me.A couple of nits:*On the one I have, you have to tighten the top half down very securely before placing it on the flame, or the boiling water will seep out of the sides rather than brewing up the middle.*After brewing, the carriage that holds the grounds is difficult to remove from the base. I generally pour the water out by tipping it sideways, then beat the bottom on the side of the trash can to remove the grounds, then rinse the remaining grounds and use a paper towel to remove the basket. The basket on my first one (another brand) comes out very easily.

    Good Stove Top Espresso

Got this to finally make some espresso at my own home. It came with a blemish on top upon opening so that is why it did not receive 5 stars but overall makes good coffee and really easy to clean. I’m hesitate to believe that this aluminum body will hold up well over time but we will find out. Honestly, already love it and will buy again when it breaks.

    Great Coffee

This is the third one of these I’ve bought. The first one delighted me when I realized that it works exactly like my grandma’s old electric coffee percolator. As to the question about blending power??!! It’s not a blender. I don’t understand the rating of blending power, so I gave it a one star because . . . it’s not a blender. Inside is a small canister type thing with a a pipe down to the bottom. Unscrew the top from the bottom, fill the bottom with water, then fill the canister thing with coffee–level and not packed–then screw the top on. Set it on the stove, or camp fire, and the water boils and is forced up through the pipe and through the coffee. It comes out in the top part and you’re left with a strong espresso type coffee that I find delicious. I do also like a coffee press, but I feel like this makes a stronger brew. * Hot tip * This can also be used with herbs and coconut oil, or cocoa butter, to make an infusion that you can use in cooking, or even as a lubricant.

    Great value

We make our espresso almost every morning with this pot. I bought this size so we could make more than two servings when we have company. It’s been reliable and makes very strong espresso. You don’t need to buy expensive gear to make homemade coffee drinks. We have this pot and a $6 whisk and we are enjoying fabulous lattes and cappuccinos for a few cents a day. Don’t put aluminum in the dishwasher because it will tarnish and become a dull chalky grey (learned the hard way once). This one is easy to clean and I’ll probably keep using it for many years to come. If you need strong coffee to make americanos and other frothed milk coffee drinks this is your gadget. Very worth the few dollars spent.

Oh my God I could not live without this

This is the way to go to make your coffee! I’m sitting here enjoying a delicious cup of coffee that I made in this lovely little moku pot. I got the silver one. The quality is superior. The taste of the coffee from this thing is just incredible. So I actually usually either have a Americano or a cappuccino with this the coffee you’re going to make from this is going to be very strong and concentrated so I add about half as much hot water to the espresso. This is the trend. This is the coffee maker you want. No one’s doing drip anymore that’s over it’s kaput if you’re not making your coffee and this you’re not cool and all of your friends are gonna make fun of you well they’re not going to, but I will. Lol! I’m just kidding. Obviously I’m getting all hopped up on the caffeine. See what I mean this is your key to having a great day and I do sincerely hope everyone of you reading this does. Have a lovely day! Cheers!

This is the coffee maker I’ve been looking for!

I have quite a collection of coffee makers, not as a collecting hobby but as a quest to find my perfect home-brewed cup of coffee. This is one of the best ones I have, for my taste. It makes an espresso-style brew. This “12-cup” size is really a misnomer, claiming to be a demitasse-size cup. Filling it to the max gets you about 2 cups (16 fluid oz.) of espresso. That’s quite a bit, for this strength of coffee, but it makes for good iced coffee with what is left over. I had tried the 9-cup version first but found that to be a bit too small to fit on the gas burner on the stove. This one is the perfect size and I can use it on the larger burner without having the flames extend past the base. The plastic handle still gets hot so you might want to use a pot holder when lifting it off the burner and pouring.Fill the base up to, but not covering, the vent hole. Add 1/2 cup fine-ground coffee to the filter – do not press down. FIRMLY screw the top on – you want to make sure it doesn’t lose any pressure through the threaded part. Place on the burner, making sure the flames don’t extend past the base (or it might melt the handle.) It takes about five minutes for the pressure to build, and you will hear the coffee perk up into the container. Don’t peek, or you might get sprayed with hot coffee! Once the percolating has settled down (it will only take a few seconds), turn off the burner and remove the pot. Pour into a 16-20 oz container, or directly into your small cup.Pictured is a 3/4 oz shot glass. I like the stem because the glass gets hot (and I don’t have demitasse cups.) My sister tried only this much and said she was getting a buzz already by this little amount! I like drinking it black this way, but iced I usually add some cream and sugar.

great brewer but handle melted off and manufacturer stood behind product

I love this little brewer and used it daily for about 3 months. The handle is a hard plastic and never got hot which I appreciated. However, the other day I picked it up when the brew was done and the handle felt loose. Luckily, I grabbed a pot holder to stead the bottom of the pot because the handle just came right off. I could have gotten badly burned had I carried it one more foot to the countertop. I wrote to the company and received the courtesy of a reply. After submitting proof, they are sending a new one. I have a 12 cup Primula too and so far it’s holding up.

Good for the price, but leaks when pouring

I bought this little moka pot for making Cuban style coffee in the morning since it’s become my new addiction. It works well, and the coffee turned out perfect! I just wish I could find a way to keep it from leaking every time I pour the espresso into my cup. I’ve tightened it as much as possible, and tried with and without the silicone gasket just to see (it definitely needs the gasket!), but it still leaks every time.

  21. Eclectic Amazonian

    4.0 out of 5 stars

Makes good coffee, but needs some warnings

I’ve used this type of espresso pot for many years but it’s always been a Bialetti. When my last pot had a meltdown (forgot to put water in) I decided to try the Primula since it was on sale for a significantly lower price than the Bialetti. Overall they’re the same with a couple minor differences that lowered my rating on this. Primula recommends a fine espresso grind – I use Café Bustelo Espresso Dark Roast with good results. Per instructions, do NOT use the handle to screw or unscrew the top – it WILL break. Instead hold the bottom in one hand and the top in your other when unscrewing. Second, set the pot at the edge of the burner with the handle beyond the burner – if the handle is directly above the heat, it WILL melt. Do NOT use on high heat – use a medium setting. You can turn the burner off when you hear the coffee start to bubble up the center tube – it will stay hot enough to finish brewing and reduce the risk of burning your coffee. These issues are true for all brands of this kind of pot so it did not affect my rating. However, the handle on this pot is designed so that is easy for your top finger to brush against the aluminum connector and get burned. Also, if you let the coffee sit on the burner and it starts boiling, your hand can get scalded by steam coming around the back portion of the lid. Be sure there is no steam escaping from the pot when you pour. Per instructions, don’t use soap when cleaning, and don’t put it in the dishwasher. I just rinse in hot water after brewing. The water tank (bottom) of the pot will develop a black layer of coffee residue that an Italian family told me is a good thing – it adds to the flavor. However if you can’t deal with the look, just use a big bottle brush after each brew and it will prevent that layer from developing. Eventually you WILL have to replace the rubber gasket – at the moment Primula 9 cup gaskets are not available on Amazon, but other brands are and hopefully they will work. Finally be aware that ‘cup’ in this context means a 1 oz espresso shot – the 9 cup model is perfect for the large mug I use. All these things said, it makes great coffee if you pay attention to the instructions and take care not to burn yourself. I expect it to last for years as long as I can get replacement gaskets that fit.

    Makes a fabulous espresso!

Our last Primula styled espresso maker was borrowed and never returned so on our last vacation, we found the need to order another. I have been making espresso for over 3 decades and have learned a thing or 2 which may help others. The Primula size we purchased is the 6 cup model and I am sure the 3 cup will be the same but smaller. First, make sure you use it clean and the espresso beans are finely ground. If you do not grind the beans to a fine consistency, you will get a weak espresso and nobody wants that, lol. Make sure that the seal is perfectly clean. I do use a light film of food grade lube called Petrol Gel, that helps make a perfect seal without having to over tighten. You can put a light coating on the screw area as well just remember to add a little whenever you do a thourough cleaning. Next, you add the correct ammount of water and no more. When you heat, do not heat it on the highest setting. Use it on medium heat with either electric stove or gas. When you see it start steaming, turn off the heat and let it do its thing for a couple minutes.Congratulations! You just made your first perfect espresso! Now, if you like Vannila Syrup or International Delight. Try only doing 2 second pours of a maximum of 3 flavors, with about 4 ounces of steamed milk. You will never find yourself going to Starbuck’s again…If I helped you, please hit that button and let me know so I can see if people sre actually reading my reviews. Thank you and have a great day 😉

Primula Makes A Reliable and Durable Moka Pot

I have used several brands of moka pot over the years, some costing a lot more than the Primula moka pots. Comparatively speaking, Primula has worked out the best over the long term without any problems while the same cannot be said about the other brands. Now I have two Primula moka pots of different sizes. The larger one is my go-to pot in the mornings. I just wished Primula would make a stainless steel pot since the ones I have are made of undesirable aluminum. If Primula can make as reliable a moka pot in stainless steel, I would definitely buy one or two, because I am sure I will not have to toss them like I have had to with the other brands.

    Wipe it out!!!

I’ve spent the last two weeks watching about 50 videos on how to use a Moka Pot. Everything from production videos done in a studio to videos shot in a family kitchen with kids playing in the background.Nothing could prepare me for the flavor of coffee I was about to experience.I spent my first night with my “6 cup” Primula Moka Pot making 6 pots of my favorite Breakfast Blend coffee. This was just to allow the acids to attach to the aluminum and “season” the coffee pot. I could honestly taste the changes with each pot of regular ground coffee. The next morning I used 4 Tbsp of Lavazza Gran Selezione to make my first “real” pot of coffee.I thought it was delicious. My wife loved it. we drank all 5 espresso cups of the coffee and made a new pot.***NOTE*** it made FIVE cups of coffee, not 6. If I’d have known that… I’d have bought the 9 so there would be 8. ( there’s a life lesson in there I guess; ALWAYS over estimate your needs. The next morning I woke up and made a pot of coffee ( same stuff ) and it was even better. I made it the SAME exact way… Cold water, High Heat, 4 Tbsp of Lavazza. Even though everything was the same the flavor difference was marked. Here’s what I’ve learned, DON’t wash it out with soap unless you have to. Hot Water and a papertowel are perfectly fine.Use filtered water if you can, but tap is fine too.***MOST IMPORTANT*** NEVER LEAVE COFFEE IN THE POT!!! Once you are done drinking your coffee if the pot is still to warm run it under cold water and break it down. CLEAN IT ALL!!! With hot water and a clean washcloth. Once it’s clean DRY it with a paper/kitchen towel. That keeps the acids in the coffee from reacting with the aluminum. That can happen in the base as well as in the filter. The base isn’t so bad since it’s a good bit thicker. This filter would dissolve quickly if abused. And I haven’t looked but I’d say they are hard to find for this size so you’d end up buying a new Moka Pot at that point.I have been drinking from this daily, and other than the cup count discrepancy I have NO complaints at all. it is a wonderful device that has made a morning “chore” something I look forward to. I’ve made 2 of the 6 styles of coffee that this pot is capable of. And have ordered the stuff I need to make 3 more of the styles.100% would recommend; just go one size bigger than you think you need, you won’t regret that.

Makes a great cup of coffee

I use decaf espresso to make coffee for myself in the morning. This makes a very flavorful cup of coffee. What I didn’t realize is that when they say cups in the description, they mean espresso cups. My own fault for not thinking of that. Even so, I am very happy with the purchase because of the flavor of the coffee it makes. knowing what I now know, I will buy a larger size.

Dead simple espresso at home without a complicated machine

I was a bit skeptical since we see coffee shops and restaurants with thousand dollar espresso machines. The home versions are a little less expensive but still expensive in my opinion. I’ve recently had to tighten my budget and with Starbuck devaluing their rewards program that seemed like a good place to cut. I’ll still buy their beans for home brewing. I used the Starbucks espresso beans blended fine in my coffee grinder. I watched a video online that told me to measure how much coffee just fill the pots filter with beans then grind to a fine powder. Don’t tamp down the coffee. Fill the bottom water tank just below the steam valve. If like me you are using a gas stove don’t let the flame get bigger than the bottom of the pot. I followed all these instructions and in minutes I had three delicious shots of espresso. This is going to be a big money saver for me not having to pay for my daily iced Americano. I prefer iced drinks to hot and that’s just my personal preference. Shout out to Amazon Warehouse for the great deal I was given on this moka pot. It Looked brand new when it arrived but the box was a bit beaten up and I’m sure it was probably wrapped in plastic when it was new but naked when it arrived at my home. I saved and Amazon made a profit on what could have landed in a landfill somewhere. It’s a win for everyone so check out the deals on Amazon Warehouse if you have not yet done so.

Good product for a reasonable price that will mostly do the job

this is easy to clean and good value for the money. the water reservoir can hold up to 250ML of water and the basket will hold up 30 grams of course espresso. with finer espresso it can hold slightly larger amount when the coffee is packed well.Disassembles nicely and easy for cleaning and I did not notice as suggested by some other reviews any dark residue on the cleaning sponge when I clean the reservoir or the top.the flavor can improve though and to be honest I cannot point if this is due to design flaw in the pot or to the technique used by the user (me in this case)I have been using this product coming on 3 months now.

Great coffee, here is my honest review

This Primula 12-Cup Aluminum stovetop Espresso coffee makers is a copy of

    Bialetti Moka Express Stovetop Percolator

at half the price. I have used Bialetti for almost all of my life until I moved to the U.S. I used Bialetti for a while but was disappointed with the coffee quality (due to the beans, not the Bialetti per se), so I switched to different other systems trying to get the perfect cup of coffee (I have actually tried them all, so I really know what I am talking about). I finally settled with Nespresso, which is the absolute winner in coffee making around the world. As I wrote someplace else, the only better coffee you can get, better than Nespresso, is at a coffee place in Rome named La Tazza d’Oro, near the Pantheon -just google it up and you will see pictures, etc.If you want to know my opinion, Bialetti system comes #2, very very close (to the point that if you do not want to spend big money on Nespresso machine and/or be forced to buy their capsules, Bialetti IS the way to go), but it all depends on the coffee, obviously. Something you do not need to worry with Nespresso because you always get consistently the best possible coffee, every time, no matter what (this is a very important consideration, because depending where you live, you may not be able to buy excellent/outstanding coffee beans, so you will never get a great cup of espresso with this machine. Also, I do realize coffee is above all about personal taste, so you may be happy with a regular Joe at your local convenience store … nothing wrong about it, it is your coffee, I am just talking from the perspective of a European person who is absolutely obsessed with coffee and tried dozens of varieties and systems … the only part of the coffee industry I am not familiar with is the actual growing of it, but I am actually planning on to join an enterprise venue in Guatemala and Costa Rica so I can also speak from that perspective as well).Anyway, now to this Primula. I have tried it with Costa Rica coffee from cost co, and with and the results were great, as far as I can tell, same as I remember with Bialetti, The difference of the prince may be due to this being a new brand (for as far as I can tell), so they want to get some share of the market and their products are being marked down. Also, this is made in China, which is a bummer to tell you the truth. Bialettis are made in Italy, and you can’t beat (you can get close, but not surpass) the quality of aluminum products made in Italy. Finally, I jut got this machine a couple of weeks ago, so I can NOT tell you if this is durable, or speak about the quality on the long term. Usually, all the Bialettis I purchased and used in the past lasted forever, literally, and me purchasing a new one was because of gifts, or because I needed a smaller/bigger one, etc. As a matter of fact, these things make better coffee as they get older. If you are planning on purchasing this, I absolutely recommend you to do so. Go ahead, you will get great espresso coffee on your stovetop IF you spend some good money on good quality coffee (most of the coffee sold in the U.S. does not fit that category). Also, beat in mind that this is a huge coffee maker, for 12 cups of espresso which is designed for family breakfasts (6 people or more). If you are planning on using this coffee maker for 2/3 cups of coffee, get the smaller one.I hope my honest review was helpful. If you go to Spain, France, Italy, almost everybody has one of these (Bialetti, most likely), and nowadays people also have bought a Nespresso machine in addition to this one, but this one is still being heavily used.Enjoy!

This makes the best pot of coffee, but get the big one!

I didn’t realize the size of an Italian cup of coffee. Americans like everything big, and that includes our cups of coffee. The flavor is so much better than a drip coffee pot (and I don’t know why!!). I will however have to upgrade to the bigger version. I might even get two, one for the house and one for the camper.

Great for making decoction for S. Indian “filter coffee”, but be careful about the handle

I love my S. Indian filter coffee. The gravity driven process for making decoction is time consuming, especially when you want you first coffee as soon as possible. So, I switched to using a chickory blend in my Keurig. close, but not the same. Then I read about the Moka pot, where the pressured steam passes through the coffee grounds and maked the decoction/espresso. Curious, and not wanting to spend a whole lot of money, I bought this.I made my first batch of decoction with Udhayam Indian coffee/chicory blend and was blown away! It took just 3 minutes and I had strong decoction to make four 8 oz cups of strong “filter coffee” with whole milk!My American family loves my filter coffee. I make 20 cups for thanksgiving and I used this moka pot to make all the decoction/espresso.Caution/Warning: I did multiple batches of espresso back to back and at some point the plastic handle melted and stuck to my finger when I picked it up. To be fair to the seller, they do warn us to not keep the handle close to the fire.My tips to a good espresso: Fill the bottom with lukewarm water below the safety valve. Fill the coffee grounds in the container and slightly tamp it down. Screw the top on. Heat at medium or below and let the espresso come out at the top. Lower the heat and let the process finish. Immediately transfer the espresso to a different container to prevent scorching.I have used Indian filter coffee brands (Kothas, Udhayam) and Costco dark roast with great success.Hope you find this review useful.

An affordable alternative to an espresso machine.

The media could not be loaded.

I’ve only used it once so far & product didn’t give me any difficulties. Very easy to use. I recommend filling up the water just a little under the valve. Also, I’d suggest brewing just water the first time to really get a good internal clean. After some googling, don’t use soap after use, just a hot water rinse will work fine but to each their own.I recommend this product but will update after a few months to see how it holds up.Note: after drinking my cup of espresso, once it was time to rinse the pot I did notice left over espresso under the filter where the water goes. (pictured attached) Not sure if that was on my end but I’m certain I poured like any normal person would. Maybe I have to completely flip the pot to get everything? (you would expect to not have to do that cause then the lid would just completely open up.) it isn’t a huge deal but I guess just felt like a waste of espresso and maybe not my full 3 shots since I ordered the 3 cup size. (Essentially means 3 espresso shots.) All in all, it’s a great little product, didn’t come defected and a great way to brew some coffee!

    Just what I wanted!

This is the genuine item. It’s aluminum, well made an packaged, and makes fine espresso style coffee. The lower filter cup (where you put the ground coffee) does not disassemble for cleaning, but all other sections are fully cleanable. It’s a good product!

    Solid Greca or Moka Pot

This is probably my favorite way to make coffee as it gives you great control over the strength of your brew. It takes some time to heat up, and it does have some leakage as you pour if you’re careful though so keep that in mind!Note: This is a great smaller greca if you’re only brewing coffee for one person; I’d recommend sizing up for more people.

Prepare a low to medium heat

Needed a new one, previous was getting old and some of the insulation had deteriorated. Bought this. First, misjudged the size. Thought three espresso cups make at least 2/3 of a regular cup, wrong. Needed at least a 6 espresso cup volume. Taste. Not as good as my previous coffee pot of similar design, but still OK. Easy to clean. One note, coffee should be at low to medium heat. If high heat, leaves a burnt taste in the coffee.

    Great Product

I got this item and unfortunately I had to return it. It’s a great solid product, but the base was too small for our gas stove. The coffee maker’s bottom diameter is too small causing the flame to come out too much on the side and also not steady on the burner. It would be great for those new stoves that have the small burner or the new electric induction stove top i suppose.

    Rich coffee

Rich, high quality brew. However, it only produces 2 servings. So I would suggest a bigger one. The frothed works great!

Good if you haven’t used the real thing

Accidentally left my Bialetti at a friend’s and bought this as a temporary replacement. If you don’t have any exposure to the genuine article, this moka pot gets the job done. If you’re used to Bialetti’s you’ll probably notice the sharper edges and the leakiness. The coffee it makes tastes pretty much the same, so I can’t knock it too hard. 🙂

    Refurbished ??

Not the first time I am buying this great coffee maker and ordered three different sizes. The 9 cup one came without original package and seems a shelf display or used with some little rust from inside corner. Have ordered replacement considering this to be a mistake in an otherwise great product.Update: The replacement came in regular, plain plastic envelope with no cushion. It was damaged and envelope all torn apart. There is definitely a packing/mailing problem. Have to order replacement, may be a third time will get it right. How about sending an original one in its box as it should be.

Great product, but hard to pour cleanly

This is a great coffee maker, I’ve had it for a couple of months and have no problems with it. Even when the stove caught on fire once it survived without a hitch. My only complaint is that there’s always some coffee that drips to the table when I’m pouring, so you have to be very careful if you don’t want to make a mess every single day.I bought the 6-cup, it’s enough for 2 decent cups of coffee in the morning. If you fill it all the way up with coffee powder it’ll give you about 6 espressos.

    Boils over

Rough insides and boils over on low-medium to medium heat. I would not recommend this product to someone who likes to keep their stove clean.
