Good read, some information is duplicated from his first …
Good read, some information is duplicated from his first book but i still learned a hell of a lot about wood, resins, fires and other stuff that it more than made up for any dupe info. This guy knows his stuff. It’s a great helpful guide for beginner campers/survivalists like myself. The people that complain about his information and the illustrations expect a lot, almost too much, from a $10 book. I’d suggest saving the money and traveling to attend one of his courses if you want more information. It’s a $10 book but I personally felt i got more than my moneys worth. People complain too much about purchases on amazon…sorry rant over. This is a great book for the price.

Great Book for the woods
This is the 2nd of several books that I have bought authored by Dave Canterbury. He is very accomplished at his skills and does an excellent job of delineating the use of these when you find yourself in a survival situation, or a regular trip of incursion into the woods for a few days. You will learn a great deal, and it fits well in a backpack. Thanks Dave.

Decent beginner to intermediate.
Cool little reference book for beginner to intermediate outdoors people. Quick on the fly access to tips and skills, and also helps you to think outside the box a bit. Anything can be used for something.

Good gift for a newbie
Got this as a gift and the person receiving it loved it. The cover is hard but soft and has a protective coating which is really nice. You could take this out with you and not worry about destroying it.

Good basic guide
Would have liked pictures instead of drawings. More detail about how to make some of the items. More detail. Overall a good book… I just wanted more

Its a good book for yer kid’s pack.
It’s all pretty basic stuff. Which is fine for my 9yr old son whom I bought it for. He keeps it in his pack whenever we go out in the woods and it’s been fun going into some of the subjects with him. If you are an experienced woodsman there’s nothing real earth shattering in here. If you are gifting to a youngling or didn’t grow up in the sticks I’d say go for it.

A must read from a great modern bushcrafter
What I absolutely love about Dave Canterbury and his teachings is that he speaks of living in the woods and not just survival. It’s not about how much you can pack in a bag as it is how much you can work with what mother nature provides. Now this book provides a deeper understanding and more in depth skills for living in the woods based upon Dave’s experiences and through his research of people’s who’ve done it many years before. Its well written and is a must read for anyone who is serious about learning to live amongst mother nature in her purist form.

This is a good follow-up to Bushcraft 101
This is a good follow-up to Bushcraft 101, with a lot of info. I would have given it 5 stars but it could use a little more detail in some of the instructions and while a good deal of detail is given on wood / tree types and uses, they are primarily trees native to what I assume to be the Author’s area. So unless you live in the northeast, those sections are pretty useless. I would love to see more information on, at least, the rest of the US.

The title doesn’t lie.
This book has a lot more than what I expected. This book is defiantly advanced and has less application to the average bush crafter or backpacker than the Bushcraft 101 book written prior. This book goes over long term stay in the wilderness to where it was almost a homestead kind of feel. Don’t get me wrong I’ve read this book twice, I love anything Dave Canterbury has to write. But as far as applicable practices go this book doesn’t seem to hit quite where I wanted it to. I would recommend this book to anyones collection though, fantastic read.

Not exactly “advanced…”
…but it will provide some interesting reading in the field. I’ve done a fair amount of backpacking, snow camping, hunting, fishing, etc. I even took non-recreational backpacking courses intended for training teachers in college. This is just fun reading where I can learn a different take or a trick or two. Mine came with rounded corners! This should help it make it through being stuffed in a backpack! Nice touch.

Dave does it again
This is a solid second-in-the-series product in Canterbury’s “Bushcraft” series. The material is solid and the format is pretty good. That said, there are a could of “could be betters”. Example, the weaving sections need more illustrations. While I can gather the info I need to figure out from other sources, trying to follow along with JUST this volume is difficult. I think that the information might have been better served with a larger volume, or divided up into 2 books with more detail.

I give it a ‘Meh…’
Since this book is titled “Advanced Bushcraft”, I expected many more advanced topics and more in-depth coverage than the first book (“Bushcraft 101”), but I have to say I was disappointed. From my perspective, this was more or less a continuation of “Bushcraft 101.” While the information was mostly accurate, I didn’t find it particularly advanced or complete, and almost seemed as if the author rushed to put this out.PS – On page 237 there is a statement, “In the Northern Hemisphere, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.” It’s the same in the Southern hemisphere. (Yes, for the purists, technically the sun doesn’t “rise”, but rather the Earth rotates to make it visible. The point is that both hemispheres are rotating in the same direction.)

Great for beginner Bushcrafters
This book provides a great deal of general information and some detailed as well. But it is mostly good for beginners. It is a good book to get started with bushcrafting. I would absolutely recommend it for anyone interested in learning bushcraft and basic survival.

This is a really great book that adds upon Dave Cantercurys bushcraft 101
This is a really great book that adds upon Dave Canterburys bushcraft 101. These extra pages allow him to go deeper onto some of the topics that were only paragraphs. My brother and law does not know much about bush crafting, but had an interest in knife making he couldn’t put it down and read all about making knives. We also had time to try some of the dead fall traps, Cant wait until the next series comes out. If you are just getting into bush crafting start off with Bushcraft 101 by same author before you read this one.

The second book of Dave Canterbury’s. I have Bushcraft 101 signed by him. I still plan on sending this one out to have it signed by him as well. It’s all great knowledge for folks starting out or seasoned woodsman like myself. I sometimes need a trustworthy reference to go back to. Dave isn’t always available but his books are!

If you liked the last installment then you will be pleased with this one. I know it is trendy in bushcraft and woodcraft books to include hand drawn illustrations rather than photographs. I think that is fine in some cases but for the most part, I think books like this benefit from real photographs. This is why I didn’t give it a perfect score. Otherwise the information is great.

Good, but repetitive
Helpful, with more specific details than the Bushcraft 101, such as wood burning characteristics. I’m not sure if it ultimately necessary as an add-on to the 101. There is a lot of repetitive information

Too basic for an advanced guide
Disappointed with this book. Thought it would provide more thorough discussion into technical topics such as shelter building, traps, and preserving food, but instead mainly provided overview and a couple examples. Also, this book has a section on tree species that only focuses on East Coast USA tree species (ie deciduous) and should be inclusive of all tree species in the US since the audience needs information for anywhere bushcraft is needed. Pretty basic for an advanced read.

We were looking more for a manual on how to go about trapping and foraging and such. They were good overviews, but not enough detail to put into practice in the wilderness.

A must have for any survival enthusiasts
This is the perfect survival book for anyone to own. Especially for beginners. If you’re an expert, you might learn a thing or two. It’s very informative and has everything that you need to know for basic understanding on how to survive. It doesn’t matter on your skill level, having this book could teach you or anyone you know how not to die in the wilderness. I highly recommend this book to all beginners and moderate bushcrafters that this book will be the absolute perfect book to have as a collection. I could go all day bragging how good this book is. It’s a number one must have. After mastering these skills, it’ll be hard to find a similar book with these teachings and information.

Both of Dave Canterbury’s books are excellent and I highly recommend both as gifts to friends …
Without a doubt one of the most concise books on survival and bushcraft. Whether for when SHTF, prepping, end of the world scenario’s etc. or just plain educational knowledge regarding outdoor techniques. Both of Dave Canterbury’s books are excellent and I highly recommend both as gifts to friends or family. This is the type of material that should be mandatory in schools to help kids learn more than video games, tv, and electronics. Instead playing a game about something take this knowledge and help them “GO LIVE” with it. This dips back into aspects of old outdoorsmen writers such as Horace Kephart’s, “Camping and Woodcraft” but also adds a new and updated spin including building kit components from modern implements and technology as well as living off of the land. He also gets into the quality of components you choose for your various kits and how longevity is key to items you need to have at your disposal. I can’t recommend this book and its predecessor enough. I also will say if Dave Canterbury speaks, its worth listening because he knows of what he speaks and writes. The only thing I could recommend is to offer the book in a waterproof “rite-in-the-rain” style format. BUY multiple copies now and give as gifts to watch your friends actually get lost in something for the first time in a long time. For any amount of money this material is actually “PRICELESS”.

So so guide
The part on foraged berries was very thin, I don’t think there was enough material to correctly identify plants and I would worry that someone would misidentify and get poisoned potentially. The tools section was kind of bizarre, it seemed like the direction he went was carrying all the gear to make your own planks of wood in the forest. I’m not sure how helpful that would be carrying all those axes and saws. You could make plenty of stuff with just your knife axe and some rope as far as shelters and such go. Planks seem kind of iffy unless you have nails and things in the woods. The food preservation was strange it seemed to be mostly on making acorn and cattail flour. While it doesn’t make a lot of sense to even spend the energy doing that if you’re going to go the flour route you should go all the way and explain how to make a clay oven in the wild and have some recipes for baked goods. I was expecting more like some better plant keying and showing how to make a sun dehydrator or such and maybe going over smoking and drying meat. I think it should of gone over how to make some proper caches to store the food you’re keeping so bears and other animals don’t get into it, that was a pretty big gap. I was kind of hoping for some long term survival foods you could make in the wild like showing how to make pemmican or parched corn but none of that was in there. The machines seemed mostly focused on lifting heavy objects. I’m a little iffy on how useful that would be in the woods though it could have some merit. I think including a rope spinner might of been more practical as making rope and cordage and such are pretty useful.Wish the bow and arrow had more info, not sure you could make a bow and arrow with his limited description. I think putting a multitool with a file on it and talking about how to use it to file your own bone arrowheads would of made it better than saying to carry a carving knife which has limited utility compared to a multitool.

Great Read fun & easy to follow
Dave is a good author and shares good information, but nothing “advanced” in this book. He reviews the topics covered in Bushcraft 101 with little additional insight. Biggest addition seems to be more detail on bow drills, but your better of watching YouTube videos for that demonstration than reading about it.I still love reading his books, but don’t order this thinking you will be making spoons or building shelters.

Clear Fun Non-morbid.
Dave Canterbury’s book is like the Boy Scout Manual for adults. It’s fun reading, clear and instructive, with safety at the forefront of each project. Not everyone will be capable of mastering all the skills presented in this book. Health and general condition must be a factor. But practicing the skills one can accomplish will.always give the outdoors person a certain panache others will never have.

EXCELLENT BOOK AND FOLLOW-UP TO DAVE CANTERBURY’S FIRST BOOK, BUSHCRAFT 101
Dave Canterbury, to my mind, is the undisputed guru when it comes to backwoods / wilderness survival and associated skills. Dave doesn’t simply write about this stuff, or test things that others make and review them. He lives his craft, teaches it to multitudes, and writes very informative books and blogs on these associated topics.. I have two of his excellent books; BUSHCRAFT 101, and ADVANCED BUSHCRAFT – each meant to be a field guide to the art of wilderness survival.. Canterbury is a very accomplished writer and author. His books are easy to read and understand while being generously peppered with superbly drawn illustrations explaining the topic at hand. This book is a welcomed follow up to his Bushcraft 101 book. It provides many advanced techniques seldom found elsewhere. If you want to learn basic and advanced woodsman skills, learn them from the best.. Dave Canterbury is, IMHO, the best there is..

Lots of Information…but not a great guide
This book is very all-over-the-place. One section it is pointed out that the sun rises in East and sets in West, but then there is a chapter on building a loom to weave and one on how to blacksmith. That extreme is present throughout the book. And there seems to be a lack of drawings and how-tos, most items are written out in paragraph format. Easy to read, but IMO not a great reference book.I read in a review prior to purchase that the autho makes a point to illustrate what a pine needle (?!) looks like, but does not include pictures in more technical sections. I feel this accurately describes the entire book.Undoubtedly, there is good material in here which is why I gave it three stars. However, finding that material amongst the wild ride of a book, and then hoping there MIGHT be an illustration, is what disappointed me here.

A knowledgeable read
I learned some tips i’ve not seen before especially in navigating without a compass. Their is some good basic info on metal forging, a future passion of mine. I only gave a four star because although the charts and drawings were good I would of liked to see more and possibly some color charts for the plants. Probably not Dave’s fault but I read this on a kindle it would of been nice to magnify some of the drawings such as the different tarp set-up. I am a big fan of Dave Canterbury especially his videos and his self reliance store which he reviews a lot of his and others products out in the field. I’m happy to add this to my collection of survival and bushcraft books, but with all his knowledge I’d like to see something going even more in depth in details.

Great book
I have watched many of Dave Canterbury’s YouTube videos and have found each one to be very informative. Dave’s book, “Advanced Bush Craft” by Dave Canterbury, follows many of his bush craft instructions seen on YouTube. This is the book a person involved or have interest in bush craft to take with them on an adventure in the woods. There are so many things to remember if you only watch Dave’s YouTube videos. By having this book with you on the trail you can practice many of Dave’s bush craft skills along with an excellent reference in hand. I would highly recommend this book for your library.

Great book so far
I’m probably very biased because I love Dave Canterbury but this book is great. I started reading it today and wish I had it currently so I could continue reading it now. I just started it so I can’t say too much about the contents but I did read the bushcraft 101 and it had some very good tips in it so I’m sure this is just as good (just more advanced!) book has a nice cover on it too, very old school feel to it. I’m going backpacking this weekend so this is gonna be my entertainment for the trip I’m excited to try and use some ideas and practice the art of BUSHCRAFT!
